POKOTABI / Otaya
おたや
Hidden on the 2nd floor near Nogata Station, Otaya pairs careful seasonal appetizers with red-vinegar nigiri in an intimate counter setting.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Just steps from Nogata Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line, Otaya sits tucked away on the 2nd floor of a commercial building. Inside, a hushed counter welcomes diners into an intimate dining room where only a handful of seats look directly onto the chef's workspace, allowing for relaxed conversation and close appreciation of every slice and press.
The meal centers on an omakase progression, transitioning naturally from seasonal appetizers to nigiri. Rich monkfish liver and thoughtfully composed small plates set an easy rhythm for sipping drinks. When the nigiri arrives, the rice—seasoned with red vinegar (akazu)—gives way gently on the palate, carrying toppings cut and seasoned to their best advantage, from delicately scored squid and savory beltfish to naturally sweet surf clam.
The beverage list includes curated sake, wine, and beer chosen to accompany the seasonal fare. Because the restaurant operates strictly by reservation for both lunch and dinner, booking ahead is essential, whether planning an understated celebration or an unhurried solo evening at the counter.
